Fifteen years ago, my life took an unexpected and terrifying turn. At just 29 years old, while serving in the U.S. Navy, I was diagnosed with Stage III Invasive Ductal Carcinoma breast cancer. At the time, I was young, a mother, and focused on my military career, never imagining I would be facing one of the toughest battles of my life.
The diagnosis was overwhelming. I had to undergo chemotherapy, a mastectomy, and radiation at Madigan Army Medical Center. While the physical and emotional toll was immense, I found strength in the most unexpected places. My family, friends, and my fellow service members became my pillars of support. Their encouragement gave me the will to fight when I felt I had none left. My faith became stronger as I leaned on it to guide me through the darkest days.
Cancer tried to take away my spirit, but it gave me a new purpose instead. After going into remission and leaving the Navy, I dedicated my life to helping others facing similar battles. Through my work with ACS CAN, I am committed to advocating for cancer patients and survivors, ensuring that no one fights this battle alone.
My struggle became my strength. It shaped me into the advocate, the fighter, and the survivor I am today. If you’re facing something difficult, know that you have strength inside you that you may not even realize. Keep pushing forward—you’re stronger than you think.
